The Best All-Natural, Budget-Friendly Organic Pesticides for Your Home Garden
Here are some of our top picks for creating effective, organic pesticides for your home garden. To ensure your pesticide remains organic, always use certified organic ingredients.
Neem
Neem oil has been cherished in ancient India for its pest-repelling properties. Neem juice, packed with over 50 natural insecticides, is one of the most potent natural pesticides available. To make a neem oil spray, blend 1/2 ounce of high-quality organic neem oil and 1/2 teaspoon of mild organic liquid soap (I use Dr. Bronners Peppermint) into two quarts of warm water. Stir slowly, pour into a spray bottle, and apply immediately.
Salt Spray
To combat spider mites, mix 2 tablespoons of Himalayan crystal salt into 1 gallon of warm water and spray it onto the affected plants.
Mineral Oil
Combine 10 to 30 ml of high-grade organic mineral oil with one liter of water. Stir the mixture and transfer it to a spray bottle. This pesticide is excellent for dehydrating insects and their eggs.
Citrus Oil & Cayenne Pepper
This blend is effective against ants. Mix 10 drops of citrus essential oil with 1 teaspoon of cayenne pepper in 1 cup of warm water. Shake well and spray on the infested areas.
Soap, Orange Citrus Oil, & Water
For a natural pesticide, mix 3 tablespoons of liquid organic Castile soap with 1 ounce of orange oil in one gallon of water. Shake well. This solution is particularly effective against slugs and can be sprayed directly on ants and roaches.
Eucalyptus Oil
Eucalyptus oil is a great natural pesticide for flies, bees, and wasps. Simply sprinkle a few drops where the insects are found, and they will soon disappear.
Onion & Garlic Spray
Mince 1 organic clove of garlic and 1 medium-sized organic onion, then add them to 1 quart of water. After an hour, mix in 1 teaspoon of cayenne pepper and 1 tablespoon of liquid Castile soap. This spray retains its potency for up to a week if stored in the refrigerator.
Chrysanthemum Flower Tea
Chrysanthemum flowers contain pyrethrum, a powerful chemical that immobilizes insects by attacking their nervous system. To make this spray, boil 100 grams of dried flowers in 1 liter of water for twenty minutes. Strain, cool, and transfer to a spray bottle. It can be stored for up to two months. Adding some organic neem oil can boost its effectiveness.
Tobacco Spray
Tobacco spray, though harmful to humans, has been used historically to eliminate pests like caterpillars and aphids. Mix 1 cup of organic tobacco into 1 gallon of water and let it sit overnight. If the mixture is too dark after 24 hours, dilute it with more water. This spray is suitable for most plants except those in the solanaceous family (tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, etc.).
Chile Pepper & Diatomaceous Earth
Grind 2 handfuls of dry chiles into a fine powder and mix with one cup of diatomaceous earth. Add this mixture to 2 liters of water and let it sit overnight. Shake well before applying.
